The custom IC CAN be replaced. I have the repair boards for it (at
least I am quite sure these are for that series!).

The question is, do people want to pay $150US for the replacement
part?

In other words the Memory unit is faulty - and as we all know - it has
a custom IC in it that (as far as I know) isnt substitutable and is
nearly impossible to find.
