Default Blue Cross in France during WWI

Question concerning the Blue Cross during World War One. I have two
covers as follows:

Both are covers from France and concern soldiers. I know of the Blue
Cross UK animal welfare charity. They started out in Victorian times,
looking after working horses in London. Their website is
http://www.bluecross.org.uk/web/site/home/home.asp. I have an image for
the Blue Cross in this regard he

There is also present day Blue Cross & Blue Shield Health Insurance in
the USA and Blue Cross in Europe which nowadays seems to help those
suffering from alcholism or drug addiction.
My question is: What was the Blue Cross during WWI? What was their
connection with the Red Cross? What happened to the Blue Cross? Any help
would be very myuch appreciated.
