WTB: replacement speaker for Wurlitzer OMT CD
 

Anyone have one of these laying around? I know I could put any comparable
speake in but want to keep the box looking and sounding original. I would
buy new but Wurlitzer prices these drivers at around $100ea.

You should be able to have it reconed for half that price. And if it's
a good shop, it will be just like original. I personally wouldn't worry
about it looking original, but you mention sound, and yes, you can't buy
any old same size speaker and expect it to sound the same. The people
who recone speakers normally use original parts they purchase from the
speaker manufacture, so it will sound the same.

yes, been there, done that. The problem is that the guys at Freeman-Tuell
(speaker reconers in Dallas) are having a problem finding a replacement
voice coil for it. They explained that they normally don't replace the VC
during recone but the epoxy had leaked down between the voice coil and
magnet during the initial recone totally botching the job. Anyhow they claim
it is a ******* size and they are trying to locate one for it now. Was
hoping someone had one pulled and ready to go.

BTW - $100 for that driver is highway robbery

No, it probably isn't if that was all this box needed. Unfortunately, I
have another $300+ in cosmetic parts just to make it look decent again.

At some point you have to take a hard look at OEM part prices versus std
market prices. $100 for a simple 10", 4ohm, 50 watt speaker seems a little
high when generic units can be bought all day long for around $20-$50. Even
the speaker guys couldnt believe that driver was priced that high from
Wurlitzer.

What? I always thought the term "recone" didn't reflect what they
actually did *most* of the time. The only speakers I ever had repaired
without getting new voice coils where for some old Marantz where the
foam surround disinigrated.

I am assuming your bad speaker had a tear in it but other wise was fine?
Or was the "spider" broken?

Ah, just checked the price list, my cost is more than the price of
reconing by a reasonable amount. So $100US is not out of line for that
speaker - at least form Wurlitzer...
