Help for Bookstores in Portland/Seattle
 

My girlfriend anI are going to the Pacific northwest. All she said was
she wanted to go to Powell's. (Don't worry about Powell's. It's a damn
good book store and a wonder to behold. Anyone who gets cranky about
this will be condemned to wandering Barnes & Noble in the after life.)

I would like to find "rare", "antiquarian" book stores or ephemera shops.

I would appreciate a rapid reply. dilatory is my given name.

Or you could try asking in a book collectors group, where perhaps there
might be at least one or two people who actually had an interest in the
special concerns of collectors. Heck, they might even be able to tell you
what their favorite shops specialized in, to save you a needless trip to
view a bunch of beat up paperbacks, when you really wanted science fiction
or American history.

Yes, of course the "Yellow Pages" is a compendious list of book dealers
who choose to advertise. (Lest you become further exercised, "Yellow
Pages" is a singular entity. Thus, "is" agrees with the subject.)

I was hoping a person familiar with the Pacific Northwest book scene
could provide some wisdom.

Clearly, wisdom is not your stock in trade. Perhaps an extended
correspondence with the M.I. 5 guy would be a profitable use of your
finely honed wit.

I'm sorry, perhaps you have not been sufficiently instructed in the art
of capitalization with a keyboard.

1.) Depress the key that displays the word "Shift"

2.) Simultaneously press the letter you wish to begin the sentence.
Release the key marked "Shift". This will allow you to proceed with
smaller letters. On no account, depress the key denoted as "Caps Lock".
This will cause your correspondents to "Heap coals of fire on your head".

While in Seattle, take the bus over to the Fremont. There are three
quite nice bookstores all on the same stretch of a street called
"Stone Way North." Bob Brown (and associates) specializes in science-
fiction and mysteries, but one of the others (at least) was a general
shop, with pretty good stock. Some nice restaurants and all kinds of
shops, for a pleasant afternoon away from downtown.

Check over Evelyn's list carefully. It's all but impossible to keep
something like that up to date, given how quickly (alas) bookstores go
out of business.

I hope you have allocated plenty of time for Powell's. g

Besides the "big" Powells in the Pearl District, try the store on
Hawthorne Distrist, 3723 SE Hawthorne Blvd. Although the selection is
not as large as the Pearl District store, often I find interesting
titles in the mystery and science fiction areas.

Also on the same street is Hawthorne Boulevard Books, 3129 SE
Hawthorne Blvd, This is a little white house, stuffed full of books in
many different subject areas. No paperbacks, just all hardbacks of
various vintages. Not much in genre fiction, but good seleciton of
nonfiction of all types.

Across the street from Hawthorne Boulevard Books is a mystery
bookshop. They specialize in new books but do have some used, Among
the new books, they have some titles imported from Great Britain and
some from smaller reprint presses that are not easily available in
other bookstores.

I always hit all three stores when I'm in Portland as well as the
downtown Powell's and some of the other bookstores mentioned
already.

I second the recommendation for the Stone Ave bookstores in the
Fremont neighborhood of Seattle. There's actually three stores in a
row: B. Brown & Assocs,with a wide range of fine first editions and
rare collectibles in science fiction and horror, SeaOcean Books,
which specializes in nautical books both fiction and nonfiction, and
Seattle Book Center, which has hardcovers in all fields, lots of
firsts and older books. These three are all in the 3500 block of
Stone.

I only meant that as a caution, not an attack, and have used the
London pages myself on at least one of my trips. (I did, in fact, send
Evelyn updates on my return, and got a quick thank-you.)
