No its not

Last time I priced these (2 year ago) - they were about $650-700 AU
for a reconditioned one (the player mechanism and the circuit board of
same size that sits under it - not the entire mechanism control board.

This was for the Rowe unit - but as far as I know the CDM 3 player
itself is identical in all brands. (the 12s are the same in rowe and
wurly and fully interchangable)

The 2 I bought have not given me any problems

You need the CDM12PRO upgrade kit...there are few if any good CDM3's
left in existence, although we have had some success with reviving
them.

Have you tried cleaning the lens on the player? Also these players
will NOT work with CDR (home made CDs), only commercial ones.

to clarify that - its many of the CDM 12 that wont work with CD-R not
CDM 3.

The later CDM 12 are better I believe

Also - is there actually a CDM 12 update kit available for the
wurlitzers ? Ther is for ROWE but I have no idea of other brands

The CDM-3 really can't play the CD-R's, as well as the CDM-4I/S or
CDM12. Only with the later CDM-PROs could the CD-R be played reliably.

And (Deutsche) Wurlitzer does make a kit for the PRO to upgrade their
machines.
