Occasionally, I bump into stamp tabs such as these:

I was wondering, if the habit of adjoining tabs was widespread
in the Romanian collection?

Does the tab increase the value of the adjoining stamp?

In the case of Copernicus, I guess the tab advertises a Philatelic
convention in Poland? was this a joint effort?

Any info would be appreciated.

Both stamps of 1957 and 1973 were issued with tabs joining them. Michel
gives prices with and without tabs for the 1957 set, the prices with tabs
being higher.

The 1973 issue is expected to have a tab. It commemorates a philatelic
exhibition in Poznan, Poland. Poland has issued two souvenir sheets on 19th
of August 1973.

such joint issues, please contact me. There are several
Polish Copernicus stamps in circulation, and I have some.
Not quite so elaborate as the Romanian ones, but yet valid

Mette I have not checked my Polish collection,
the majority I have, seem all to have tabs already.

On a Romanian note, today is "this day in history"
in 1947 that King Michael abdicated the throne, under communist pressure
Stamps, generally, from now on lose "Romania" and reveal
"Republica Populara Romania".

One must wonder how popular that really was.

Hello Rodney

Popular in this context should probably be read as "People's" - it is
in fact if not in mind synonimous. A fair number of peoples republics
do not appear to have a high regard for people and are certainly
decidedly unpopular - and Romania of a certain period more unpopular
than most !

King Michael abdicated the throne under the pressure of the USSR, the
country that totally controlled the occupied Romania. After the WWII, the
Romanian Communist party numbered about 1,000 members only. The king tried
to oppose the increasing domination of the USSR, for example by a so called
royal strike (a refusal to govern), but in vain, because the fate of Romania
was already decided, this starting by the Yalta conference.

The new name of the country, as it appears on stamps starting by 1948, was
Republica Populara Romana (I have left aside the Romanian characters, that
most newsgroup readers won't display correctly). This means Romanian Popular
Republic (one of many), as opposed to Popular Republic Romania (which means
Republica Populara Romania, the Romanian one). The small difference between
these names is eventually relevant for the spirit of those who have chosen
it.

As for the real popularity of this so called Popular Republic, it needed
concentration camps in order to successfully enforce its "popularity". A bit

I have good reasons to think that "popular" and "people's" are synonymous.
For example in Merriam-Webster, when looking for "popular sovereignty", I
have found:

1: a doctrine in political theory that sovereignty is vested in the people
as a whole rather than in a particular individual or group (as a ruling
dynasty) and as a result that government is created by and subject to the
will of the people establish the doctrine of popular sovereignty as the
foundation of modern Europe, Times Literary Supplement

As for the popularity of the Communist regime in Romania, you are certainly
right.
